Cannon Fire and Mono Lake 6/16/02

On this day, Highway 395 between Sonora Pass and Topaz was closed when the Cannon Fire threatened the town of Walker between 3:30 and 5:30 pm. One unoccupied house and a few outbuildings were lost, but all other homes were saved by the heroic work of agencies including the Mono County Strike Team (composed of Antelope Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Lee Vining Volunteer Fire Department, and Mammoth Lakes Fire Department). The next day these same agencies saved businesses and homes on the other side of the highway from the brushfire started by the crash of the C130 that was dropping retardant.
